Shikakai(Acacia concinna, which literally means "fruit for the hair", is a climbing shrub from the Fabaceae family and one of the oldest natural hair care products in the Ayurvedic tradition of India. The powder derived from the fruits, leaves, and bark forms a gentle lather when in contact with water, which cleanses the hair without altering its natural pH level, and leaves it exceptionally soft. Saponins give Shikakai its natural cleansing and lathering properties; a high tannin content additionally ensures antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Shikakai has an astringent effect, keeps the scalp fresh and clean, combats dandruff, strengthens the hair roots, stimulates hair growth, and helps detangle the hair. Use as a hair shampoo / hair mask

Mix shikakai powder with very hot water to a yogurt-like consistency. Add other herbs if desired.
Cover the container and let soak / macerate for 20 minutes.
Apply the paste to damp hairand massage into the scalp using gentle circular motions. Work any excess paste through the lengths of the hair.
Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
Finally, rinse with water and a splash of vinegar – this leaves the hair shiny and soft.
Tip from Indian tradition: Before use, massage the scalp with coconut or castor oil for 2–3 hours, then wash out with shikakai.

Note:Shikakai is suitable for all hair types. If you tend to have dry hair, use sparingly and combine with amla.
