Katam(Buxus dioica) is a shrub of the Buxaceae family from the desert and rocky regions of Yemen – used by Yemeni women as a natural hair dye for centuries, as dyeing hair black is not permitted for religious reasons. The powder made from the ground leaves gives the hair intense, natural brown shades up to dark brownwith purple undertones – without the addition of henna. Compared to indigo, Katam is darker and naturally more purple, which makes it ideal for enhancing henna with plum and purple tones. In addition to its dyeing properties, Katam volumizes, strengthens and restructureswith antibacterial and antifungal properties. Vegan OK – Tested for heavy metals.

Shades & mixing ratios

Brown / Dark Brown (pure):intense natural brown without the addition of henna
Plum & Purple:Add Katam to henna in small proportions
On blonde hair:Apply Katam twice – or red henna first, then Katam

Important notes

Do not use pure Katam on white, bleached or light blonde hair – risk of unwanted green/blue shades.
First apply red henna (approx. 20–30 minutes) to direct white hair towards copper tones, then Katam.
Never use on bleached hair. Do not use chemical decolorants on hair dyed with Katam.

Application

Mix enough Katam powder with warm water to form a yogurt-like consistency and wait 10 minutes.
For better adhesion: add a little baking soda or a pinch of salt to the paste.
Apply the paste to completely clean hair from the roots to the ends.
Leave on for 1–2 hours.
Rinse thoroughly. If necessary, wash again with a mild, diluted shampoo. Finally, rinse with water and a little vinegar – for longer-lasting color.
