Madder (Rubia cordifolia), known as "Manjistha" in Ayurveda and also as "Indian Madder" or "Garanza", is a climbing plant of the Rubiaceae family, from whose roots a natural red dye is extracted. In Ayurvedic medicine, Manjistha is considered the most important remedy for body detoxification. For the hair, madder imparts bright red tones – adjustable by pH: with lemon juice (oxidize for 12 hours) for warmer, with baking soda for cooler tones. The dyeing effect is not permanent; in combination with henna, warm copper tones are created. Ideal for blonde and very light brown hair for golden, warm tones. For the skin, madder has detoxifying, healing, and lightening effects on dark spots and pigmentation disorders, and is helpful for dermatitis, psoriasis, vitiligo, acne, and eczema. Not Rubia tinctoria (toxic) – exclusively Rubia cordifolia. Tested for heavy metals and the bacterial load is neutralized. Vegan-friendly – 100% organic (Organic Socert).

Shades & mixing ratios

Bright red: Mix the powder with boiling water – thicker paste for more vibrant tones, thinner for milder tones
Warmer tones: add lemon juice and let oxidize for at least 12 hours
Cooler tones: add one teaspoon of baking soda
Warm copper tones: mix with henna (vary the proportions)
Orange tones: add turmeric or rhubarb
Revitalize blonde tones: in combination with cassia

Important notes

Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.
This product contains exclusively Rubia cordifolia – not Rubia tinctoria (toxic, not approved for use as a cosmetic).
When used as a face mask, always mix with clay or herbs to avoid unwanted color tones.

Application

For hair

Mix madder powder with boiling water – for vibrant shades, mix into a yogurt-like paste; for milder shades, keep it more liquid.
Cover the container and leave to soak, well covered, for 15 minutes.
Apply the paste to dry hair. Add more herbs as desired.
Leave on for at least 2 hours.
Rinse thoroughly. Finally, rinse with water and a little vinegar – for shine and longer-lasting color.

As a face mask

Always mix madder with herbs and/or clay to avoid unwanted shades.
Leave on for 10 minutes– keep the mask moist; do not let it dry out. If necessary, moisten with water or floral water.
Rinse off with lukewarm water.
