Frequently Asked Questions about Make-up

I'm overwhelmed by the huge range: how do I find my way around the Make-up category? +
We've deliberately split the range into four main areas, so that even with several hundred items you can quickly find what you're looking for. In our Complexion category you'll find everything for an even look: foundation, BB cream, concealer, powder, bronzer, and blush. Eyes is all about the gaze, from mascara to eyeshadow palettes to eyeliner and brow pencils. Lips brings together lipsticks, lip gloss, lip scrubs, and nourishing lip oils, while in Nails you'll discover nail polish, top coats, and nail care. On top of the four main categories, you can also narrow things down on the left using filters for product type, color, price, and brand, if you only want to see mascara from Maybelline New York, for example, simply combine the product-type filter with the brand filter. That way you can narrow the range down to exactly what you're looking for in just a few clicks, whether you're reordering something specific or looking for new inspiration.
Does your make-up range also include vegan or cruelty-free options? +
Yes, quite a few actually: alongside internationally known brands such as Maybelline New York or L'Oréal Paris, we deliberately carry several certified natural and vegan brands, so there's something for different needs. Avril Cosmetics and CMD Naturkosmetik rely on certified organic formulas, GEODERM combines vegan formulas with nourishing ingredients specifically for complexion products, and Puremetics and Uoga Uoga round out the natural cosmetics offering. These products are usually clearly labeled, either directly in the product name with terms like 'organic' or 'vegan', in the description text, or via a certification seal such as Cosmos or Ecocert on the product page. An important distinction applies to the big international brands: within the EU, testing cosmetics on animals has been legally banned since 2013, and every brand listed with us is subject to this ban. However, that's not automatically the same as a complete, brand-wide cruelty-free certification from organizations such as PETA, since some companies also sell in countries where animal testing may still be required under certain circumstances. If a watertight certification matters especially to you, the most reliable approach is to look for the relevant vegan and cruelty-free seals on the specific product page, rather than relying on the brand name alone.
How do I find out what's actually in a specific make-up product? +
The most reliable source is always the INCI list on the relevant product page, where the complete composition is listed according to international standards, regardless of which brand you're looking at. With natural cosmetics brands such as Avril, CMD Naturkosmetik, or Uoga Uoga, the organic percentage and recognized certifications such as Cosmos Organic or Ecocert are also frequently shown directly on the product page, so you can easily trace the origin of the ingredients. With classic drugstore brands such as Maybelline New York or L'Oréal Paris, you'll find the INCI list just as fully listed, just without an additional organic seal, since these products are primarily designed for coverage, hold, and trend colors rather than natural cosmetics certification. If you have known allergies, sensitive skin, or fragrance intolerances, we generally recommend briefly checking the INCI list before buying and testing new products on a small area of skin first. When in doubt, especially if you've had stronger skin reactions in the past, it's also worth a quick chat with a dermatologist before applying a new product over a larger area.
In what order should I apply make-up for the best result? +
For the most even and long-lasting result, we recommend sticking to a fixed order. Start with a foundation or BB cream from our Complexion category, which you're best off working in with a sponge or brush from the center of the face outward. Concealer for under-eye circles or small blemishes comes next, followed by translucent or tinted powder, which sets everything and reduces shine. After that, move on to eye make-up from our Eyes category: first eyeshadow, then eyeliner, and mascara last, so that fine eyeshadow pigment doesn't land on freshly applied mascara. Bronzer and blush are best applied after eye make-up, so you can better judge the overall balance of the face. Lip products from our Lips category come right at the end, so that neither foundation residue ends up on the lips nor lipstick accidentally smudges onto the face. If you want especially long-lasting hold, you can also use a primer before the foundation and a setting spray right at the very end.
Which make-up is suitable for sensitive skin or sensitive eyes? +
For sensitive skin or eyes, it's often worth taking a first look at our natural cosmetics lines such as Avril Cosmetics or GEODERM, which deliberately avoid many potential irritants such as synthetic fragrances in their formulas and instead rely on more skin-friendly, often plant-based ingredients. That said, this is no guarantee against individual intolerances, since even natural ingredients such as essential oils can trigger reactions in some people. As a general rule, therefore, for any new product regardless of brand: test it first on a small, inconspicuous area of skin such as the inside of your forearm before applying it over a larger area of the face or directly on the sensitive eye area. If you wear contact lenses, we also recommend applying eye make-up especially carefully and as close as possible to the lash line rather than the lid margin, to avoid particles slipping into the eye. To remove make-up, you should use a mild make-up remover specifically developed for the eye area rather than regular facial toner, since the eye area has particularly thin, sensitive skin. If redness, itching, or persistent irritation occurs despite these precautions, you should stop using the product immediately and seek medical advice if needed.
How do I find the right foundation shade for my skin tone? +
It's best to test the shade directly along the jawline between your face and neck rather than on the back of your hand, since this spot reflects your actual facial tone much more accurately than the skin on your hand, which is often pigmented a bit differently. Then always check the result in natural daylight, for example by a window, since artificial indoor lighting can noticeably distort shades and make them look yellowish, orange, or pink-toned. Brands such as Maybelline New York with Fit Me Foundation or GEODERM with Fluid Foundation offer several different shades from light to dark, so a good match can be found in most cases. If you're torn between two neighboring shades, we tend to recommend choosing the slightly darker one, since many foundation formulas darken slightly after application and contact with skin oxidation. Also keep in mind that your skin tone can change with the seasons due to sun exposure, so it can be worth having different shades on hand for summer and winter. If you're unsure, you can also order small samples or particularly small sizes from several brands to test the shade calmly at home before buying the full size.
How long are make-up products good for after opening? +
Shelf life differs significantly depending on the type of product, because some products come into direct contact with mucous membranes or the sensitive eye area. You should replace mascara after three to six months at the latest, because of its direct contact with the eyes and the increased risk of bacterial growth, even if there still appears to be product left in the tube. Foundation, concealer, and liquid complexion products generally last around twelve months after opening, while powder products such as bronzer or eyeshadow, thanks to their drier consistency, can often be used for up to 18 to 24 months. Lipstick and lip gloss also generally fall in the twelve-to-18-month range, though lip gloss is somewhat more prone to contamination due to frequent contact with the applicator wand. A reliable guide is the small jar symbol with a month number on the packaging, for example '12 M' for twelve months, which indicates the recommended usage period after first opening. If a product noticeably changes in smell, consistency, or color, you should replace it to be safe, even if the period stated on the packaging hasn't technically been reached yet, since heat, light, and contamination from use can further shorten shelf life.
What sets the natural cosmetics brands apart from the classic drugstore brands in your range? +
Brands such as Avril Cosmetics, CMD Naturkosmetik, and Uoga Uoga consistently rely on certified organic and natural cosmetics, deliberately avoid mineral oils, silicones, and synthetic fragrances, and place particular value on transparency about the origin of their raw materials as well as often on sustainable packaging concepts. These brands appeal above all to customers for whom certified ingredients, environmental compatibility, and a natural cosmetics approach matter more than an especially large color selection. Maybelline New York and L'Oréal Paris, by contrast, score points with decades of international brand recognition, an especially wide range of colors and products for nearly every trend, and intensively tested, long-lasting formulas produced in large quantities, which usually also makes them more attractively priced. Which direction suits you personally better ultimately depends on whether the widest possible selection of trend colors and proven hold matter more to you, or whether you'd rather rely on certified natural cosmetics standards for the composition of your make-up. Many of our customers, by the way, combine both worlds, for example a natural cosmetics foundation with a trend-color mascara from the drugstore segment, entirely according to individual preference.
