Where does Avril Cosmetics come from, and what was the founding idea?
Avril was founded in 2012 by Alexis Dhellemmes near Lille in northern France, after he had spent 17 years working in classic retail. His observation: organic cosmetics were seen as expensive and exclusive at the time, even though good, certified care should be affordable for everyone. By forgoing elaborate packaging and large marketing budgets, Avril still offers certified organic cosmetics at comparatively fair prices today, largely manufactured in France.
What does the ECOCERT or COSMOS Organic certification actually mean at Avril?
This certification guarantees that products contain at least 95% ingredients of natural origin, at least 10% of which come from organic farming, and that they're completely free of parabens, silicones, PEG, and synthetic fragrances and dyes. The packaging also has to meet minimum ecological standards. Only the nail polishes are excluded from the organic certification.
Are Avril products vegan and cruelty-free?
Avril rules out animal testing entirely and is accordingly listed by PETA as cruelty-free. More than 70% of the range is vegan, but individual products contain animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax, honey, or carmine, which is noted on the relevant product page each time. What does 'to mix yourself' mean for the micellar water and eye make-up remover?
There's a clever sustainability concept behind this: instead of shipping a finished product that's usually about 90% water, Avril delivers a concentrated tablet or concentrate that you mix yourself at home with tap water in a reusable bottle. This significantly cuts down on shipping weight and packaging material. Instructions with the exact amount of water are printed right on the packaging.
Why is Avril so affordable compared to other organic brands – is the quality still there?
The lower price is mainly explained by the deliberately streamlined business model: hardly any secondary packaging, little classic advertising, and lean distribution, largely straight from Avril's own production in France. This doesn't come at the expense of certification or active ingredients, though; every formula still has to meet the strict ECOCERT-COSMOS criteria. The idea of 'making good organic cosmetics accessible to everyone' has been a fixed part of the brand philosophy from the very start.
Is organic make-up like the 99%-organic Lengthening Mascara just as effective as conventional make-up?
Natural cosmetics make-up has caught up a great deal by now and achieves comparable results in volume and hold, even though some textures feel a bit lighter. With a 99%-organic mascara, smudge- and water-resistance can be somewhat lower than with highly synthetic formulas, but it's generally gentler on sensitive lashes. Are the Bio Corrector and Bio Highlighter also suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, the natural formulas avoid many irritants such as synthetic fragrances, which makes them generally well tolerated.
